“A mainstay in Vancouver’s underground for more than a decade.”
- Vancouver Magazine
Crystal Precious is a Vancouver-based performance artist. Recognized
by the International Burlesque Hall of Fame as a “Mover and Shaker” in the
glitzy world of underground showgrrls, the former Manitoba PTE theatre kid
has been carving out a feminist space in Vancouver’s underground for over 15
years. Rapper, story-teller, dancer and curator, CP is perhaps best known for
turning up at late-night warehouse venues with sequins on her eyes, stories
on her lips and a rolling suitcase full of shenanigans.
From 2003 until 2019, Crystal Precious performed as founding member and host of the critically
acclaimed neo-troupe Sweet Soul Burlesque, which was nominated for
32 international awards throughout their 16-year run. CP also co-founded the Vancouver International Burlesque Festival in 2006 and served as Executive Director through to 2012. Her contribution to the neo-burlesque revival was born of a response to the largely misogynistic, fatphobic entertainment industry she confronted as a young woman -- as well as her love of a scandalous good time.
CP also helmed and co-owned the notorious underground venue, Dollhouse Studios, from 2006-2010. The 3000 sq foot studio served as a creative hub for electronic music's rising stars, sex-positive and queer artists, and East Van's cabaret scene. She then went on to host and produce six years of weekly cabarets with SSB at upscale cocktail lounge The Keefer Bar, singing, rapping and storytelling for a run of almost 300 shows, wrapping in 2016.
A consultant and performer with the Bass Coast music festival since its inaugural year, CP eventually began writing tracks with featured local bass and hip hop music
producers. Her debut record, the 6 track "Strip Hop" EP, was a collaboration with he prolific Self Evident, released in 2015 following the success of her video "Apple Pie (No Pie
For You)", directed by Stuart Mackay Smith.
In 2020 Crystal was invited to perform at the closing night of PUSH International Performing Arts festival in Vancouver, where she debuted new songs in her show "Things I Shouldn't Tell You", combining bass-heavy hip hop & with deeply personal storytelling.
