INTRO TO BODY NEUTRALITY
Simply put, to be “body neutral” is to exist without passing judgment or harbouring any strong emotions about the way our bodies look one way or the other. Being body-neutral also means you see ALL bodies as having equal value - regardless of size, gender, ethnicity or ability.
In this 75-minute talk, I’ll address the following topics:
How body neutrality differs than body-positivity, and how they can co-exist
The racist roots of fatphobia
The guise of “health-conscious” diet culture & the history of the BMI
Addressing more subtle internalized forms of fatphobia (aka “other people being fat is ok, just not for me” etc )
Ways that capitalist culture has co-opted body-positivity
Intersections of fatphobia, homophobia, transphobia and ableism
Body neutrality in the context of sexwork / sexwork adjacent industries
How to talk about all of these topics in a helpful way

Background:
For many MANY years, I couldn’t put my finger on why “celebrating my curves” just didn’t quite completely satisfy me as a response to fatphobia. Contrary to the phrases now co-opted by corporations, body neutrality understands that "loving the skin we're in" 100% of the time isn’t always realistic. In fact, the pressure to love our bodies can backfire, adding feelings of guilt to the mix.
I believe that having a perfect body-image is NOT REQUIRED for a full and rewarding life! I also believe it is up to ALL OF US to adopt language and behaviour that will cumulatively and effectively dismantle fatphobia FOR GOOD.
